Located on the top of Mount Hiei, Enryakuji is only able to be reached by bus or cable cars. Said to be a gateway toward the "Tower of Hell" (Trophaeum Tower), it is a resting point for travelers of all kind who plan to visit the Trophaeum Tower the next day. A variety of temples located here, none compare to the Enryakuji Temple which houses not only history, but the school of Tendai Sect of Buddhism within it. The oldest building to date from the late sixteenth and early seventeenth century. There is a museum there, the Kokuhoden Museum, which contains some exquisite statues, scrolls, and mandalas, some dating as far back as the ninth century.
